grafted treeWhen Paul speaks of believers being ‘grafted in’ to the nation of Israel, he demonstrates a solid knowledge of the ancient scriptures.

Paul, like all Jews, was fully aware that the basic and most important promise that YHVH made to Abraham was that I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring, all nations on earth will be blessed (Gen 26:4)

The word translated as ‘blessed’ is the Hebrew word בָּרַךְ (bä·rak’), a root word which conveys the image of kneeling, or bending the knee. When one received a blessing, one kneeled.

Nehemia Gordon, a scholar of Biblical Hebrew, explains that this root word was also used when speaking about agriculturally grafting a plant, because one style of grafting creates a bend or a knee where the grafted branch meets the host plant.

The sages (respected Jewish teachers) have been aware of this connotation all along and have written on it. They (and Paul) understood that part of what YHVH was promising Abraham was that the nations would be ‘grafted in’ to Abraham’s descendants and become part of the people of YHVH.   Paul was using OT terminology!

If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.  Romans 11:17-18  NIV

Ya’acov saw Elohim (God) face to face…

Thanks to Pete Rambo for bringing this to light 🙂

And, the kicker is that He was in the form of a man…  The Hebrew could not be clearer.  In Hebrew, from Genesis 32:24, 30:

(32:25) ויותר יעקב לבדו ויאבק אישׁ עמו עד עלות השׁחר׃

(32:31) ויקרא יעקב שׁם המקום פניאל כי־ראיתי אלהים פנים אל־פנים ותנצל נפשׁי׃

The Schottenstein Chumash translates these verses as follows:

v24    Left alone > was Jacob > by himself > and a man wrestled > with him > until > the rise > of the dawn.

v.30    So Jacob called > the name > of the place > Peniel >> For > I have seen > the Divine (Elohim) > face- > to- > face, > yet saved > was my life.  (Parenthesis mine)

The only thing I really wish right now is that I had an electronic version of the Schottenstein to search and find how many (or, how few) times they…

Will Angels escort you to the Heavenly realm? Scripture says nothing about this.

If we comb through the scriptures, we will never find a reference telling us that the final destination of believers is YHVH’s Heavenly Realm, [1] yet this is what we are traditionally taught in the church – in every denomination – despite the fact that Y’shua said, “No one has ascended to heaven except He who came down from heaven, the Son of Man.” (John 3:13(And a whole lot of people had already died when He said this.)  Continue reading DO BELIEVERS REALLY “GO TO HEAVEN”?

As we studied Yah’s Word, we discovered that His Ten Commandments and the Torah mitzvot [1] are inseparable.  Why?  Because His ways are not our ways, [2] so YHVH has to spell out to us what His ways ARE. Voilà! Mitzvot!

Messianic Musings – Wisdom is the Principal Thing….

got wisdomRecently, a Christian blogger that I follow with great delight (Stressless with Jesus) published an excellent post about her desire to be led by YHVH’s wisdom. The Spirit used her article to remind me that ‘wisdom’ is spoken of constantly in the Tanakh (Old Testament) as well as in the NT, so it might be helpful to do a word study and figure out precisely what scripture is speaking of when it refers to ‘wisdom.’  This turned out to be a very interesting study!
